HP Smart Tank Error Messages — What They Mean and How to Fix Them

HP Smart Tank printers show errors on the display, in HP Smart, or as vague Windows messages. This guide covers the problems we see most on HP Smart Tank home and small-office models — and what to try first.

Ink system and cartridge-door style alerts

  • Ink system failure / priming error: Power off 60 seconds, confirm tanks are filled and covers closed, then power on and let initialization finish
  • Low ink after refill: Levels are estimated — see ink refill guide
  • Close cover / access door: Seat the tank cover and front door firmly; a slightly open door blocks printing

Paper and carriage jams

  • Paper jam: Cancel jobs, power off, clear paper in the feed direction, check input tray and rear access — general steps in HP paper jam fix
  • Carriage jam: Open the access door, gently move the carriage to the center, remove scraps, close door, power cycle

Offline and communication

  • Printer offline: Same WiFi as the PC, re-add by IP — WiFi guide, offline guide
  • HP Smart cannot connect: Update the app, disable VPN, add manually with the printer IP

General recovery order

  1. Power off, unplug 60 seconds, power on
  2. Clear the print queue and retry a panel test page
  3. Update firmware in HP Smart when offered
  4. Reinstall the driver if PC-side errors remain — driver guide
