Refilling an HP Smart Tank is designed to be bottle-to-tank — but wrong color, a half-open seal, or skipping priming causes weak prints and false low-ink alerts. Use this checklist every time you refill.
Before you refill
- Power the printer on and open the ink tank cover
- Use HP or compatible bottles that match your model's tank system
- Work on a covered surface — wipe spills immediately with a damp cloth
Fill each tank
- Match bottle color to the tank label exactly
- Seat the bottle on the tank until ink flows; most bottles stop automatically when full
- Do not squeeze hard — overfilling can leak into the case
- Close the tank cover fully when all colors are done
After filling: priming and levels
- Allow the printer to complete any ink system initialization before printing documents
- In HP Smart, refresh supplies status; some models need you to confirm a refill was done
- Run a nozzle check — if gaps show, run one clean cycle, not three back-to-back
Low ink warning after a full refill
Sensors and estimated levels can lag. Print a supplies report, confirm bottles were for the correct model, and power-cycle the printer. Persistent wrong levels after a genuine refill often need a supplies reset — model-specific steps we can walk through by phone.
