HP Printer Paper Jam — How to Clear It and Stop It Coming Back

A paper jam on an HP printer is annoying, but most jams clear in a few minutes without a repair visit. This guide covers safe removal for LaserJet, OfficeJet, DeskJet, and Envy models — and what to check so the jam does not return.

Before you open anything

  1. Cancel the print job on your computer
  2. Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord
  3. Wait 30 seconds so internal rollers stop moving

Clear the jam step by step

  1. Open the front access door and any rear jam-access panel (check your model's manual if unsure)
  2. Pull paper out in the direction it feeds — never force it backward
  3. Check the input tray, output tray, and duplexer (if your model has one)
  4. Look for torn scraps left inside; even a small piece can cause the next jam
  5. Close all doors firmly, plug in, and power on

LaserJet vs inkjet differences

LaserJet: Jams often sit in the toner path or duplexer. Open the toner door and check the rear panel.

OfficeJet / DeskJet / Envy: Jams are common in the cartridge area or rear feed. Remove cartridges only if the manual says to — and avoid touching the printhead nozzles.

Stop repeat jams

  • Do not overfill the tray — stay below the fill line
  • Fan the stack before loading; avoid curled or damp paper
  • Match paper type in the driver (plain, photo, labels)
  • Clean pickup rollers with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water

When a jam will not clear

If the printer still reports a jam after you have checked every access point, a sensor may be stuck or a roller worn. Error codes like 0x6100004a often point to tray or path issues. See our HP troubleshooting guide or error codes guide.
