When HP Easy Start cannot find the printer, the installer is running and the printer is usually powered on — discovery is what failed. Easy Start looks for a USB device in setup mode or a printer advertising itself on the same WiFi. If either path is blocked, the wizard sits on “searching” and never lists your Envy, DeskJet, OfficeJet, or LaserJet.
USB: Easy Start not detecting the printer
- Use a USB data cable, not a charge-only cable. Try a rear motherboard port, not a powered hub
- On the printer, cancel any WiFi setup screen so it is idle, then connect USB after Easy Start asks for the cable
- In Windows Device Manager, look under Universal Serial Bus devices and Printers. A yellow bang or “Unknown device” means the cable or port, not Easy Start itself
- Uninstall any leftover HP software, reboot, then run Easy Start as Administrator
- On Windows 11, if Smart App Control or an antivirus quarantines the HP helper, allow the installer and retry
If Device Manager never sees the printer, Easy Start cannot either. Swap cable and port before you download another package from HP Support.
WiFi: Easy Start not finding the printer
- Put the printer in wireless setup mode (WiFi light blinking). Exact button combo is on the model sticker or panel — Easy Start will not see a printer that already joined the wrong SSID
- Join the computer or phone to the same 2.4 GHz network. Most HP inkjets ignore 5 GHz during first setup
- Turn off VPN and guest-network isolation. The PC and printer must be allowed to see each other (mDNS / Bonjour)
- Allow HP Easy Start through Windows Firewall for private networks
- If the router uses a single name for both bands, create a temporary 2.4 GHz SSID, finish setup, then move the printer if needed

Skip Easy Start and add the printer yourself
Easy Start is optional. If discovery keeps failing:
- Finish WiFi from the printer panel until the wireless icon is solid
- Print a network configuration page and note the IP
- Windows: Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers → Add device → Add manually → TCP/IP, paste the IP
- Mac: System Settings → Printers → Add → IP tab, HP driver or AirPrint
HP Smart can also add by IP after the printer is on the LAN. That path avoids Easy Start’s USB/WiFi scan entirely.
