HP Printer WiFi Not Connecting — HP Smart and Router Fixes

Wireless setup is where many HP printers get stuck — wrong WiFi band, changed router password, or HP Smart cannot find the device. These steps fix most WiFi problems on OfficeJet, DeskJet, Envy, and WiFi-enabled LaserJet models.

Use 2.4 GHz during setup

Most HP printers only join 2.4 GHz networks. If your router broadcasts one name for both bands, enable a separate 2.4 GHz SSID or temporarily disable 5 GHz while pairing.

Setup from the printer panel

  1. Open Wireless Setup Wizard or WiFi Settings on the printer
  2. Select your network and enter the password carefully (case-sensitive)
  3. Wait for the wireless icon to show connected — not blinking
  4. Print a network configuration page and note the IP address

Setup with HP Smart (Windows / Mac / phone)

  1. Install HP Smart from hp.com or your app store
  2. Put the printer in setup mode (often hold the WiFi button until it blinks)
  3. Follow in-app prompts — keep phone or PC on the same WiFi network
  4. If discovery fails, choose Add manually and enter the IP from the config page

Router and network checks

  • Move the printer closer to the router during first setup
  • Disable guest-network isolation — printers and PCs must see each other
  • After a router reset, re-run wireless setup; the printer IP often changes
  • MAC filtering on the router can block the printer — allow its MAC or turn filtering off temporarily

Re-add the printer on your computer

After WiFi is working on the printer, remove the old queue entry and add it again using the new IP. See our wireless printer setup guide for Windows and Mac steps.
