HP Smart Tank Setup — First-Time Install with HP Smart

First setup on an HP Smart Tank is different from cartridge printers — you fill bottles into tanks before you print. Follow this order so ink, WiFi, and HP Smart all finish cleanly.

Unbox and power on

  1. Remove all tape, packing foam, and orange seals from the printer and trays
  2. Install the power cord and turn the printer on
  3. Follow the control-panel prompts for language and region

Fill the ink tanks correctly

  1. Open the ink tank cover and match bottle colors to tank labels (do not mix colors)
  2. Twist the bottle onto the matching tank until it clicks or seals — Smart Tank bottles usually auto-stop when full
  3. Close the cover and wait for the printer to initialize ink (this can take several minutes — do not unplug)
  4. Load plain paper and print the alignment page when prompted

Connect WiFi or USB

Use the Wireless Setup Wizard on the printer, or hold the WiFi button until it blinks for HP Smart pairing. Prefer a 2.4 GHz network during first setup. For wireless issues later, see HP Smart Tank WiFi not connecting.

Finish with HP Smart

  1. Install HP Smart from hp.com or your app store
  2. Add your Smart Tank when the app discovers it (or enter the IP from a network config page)
  3. Sign in only if you want cloud features — local printing works without an HP account on most models
  4. Print a test page from HP Smart to confirm ink and connection

Driver on Windows or Mac

HP Smart usually installs what you need. For a full driver package or offline install, use our Smart Tank driver guide.
