HP Printer Maintenance in Progress — Stuck Fix

Printer maintenance in progress on an HP printer is a status, not an error code. The printer is charging ink, cleaning printheads, or finishing a firmware step. Unplugging it mid-cycle is what actually breaks first-time setup.

How long is normal

  • New DeskJet / Envy / OfficeJet: first printhead init often 5–15 minutes. Lights may blink with no pages out
  • Smart Tank first fill: ink charge can run 10–20 minutes after you close the tank cover. Do not lift the cover or cut power — see Smart Tank setup
  • Cleaning or alignment from HP Smart: usually 2–5 minutes plus a test page
  • Firmware update: wait until the panel says Ready. A reboot loop here is a failed flash, not a jam

If the message started after you opened a cartridge door or ran a clean cycle, wait the times above before you do anything else.

When it is actually stuck

Treat it as stuck after 30 minutes with no change in lights, no motor noise, and no progress on the panel.

  1. Confirm every door and the output tray are closed. A slightly open cartridge door keeps many OfficeJet and Envy units in maintenance
  2. Look for a paper or packing clip in the path. Maintenance will not finish if a sensor thinks the printer is jammed — clear it using the paper jam steps
  3. Cancel from the panel (X / Cancel) once. If it returns to maintenance immediately, do not spam cancel
  4. Power off from the button, wait 60 seconds, power on. Do not yank the cord on a Smart Tank that is still clicking through ink tubes unless it has been silent for 30 minutes
  5. If it returns to maintenance forever after a power cycle, print a configuration page. No page means the printhead or service station did not finish init — stop retrying cleans

What not to do

  • Do not run back-to-back deep cleans. That wastes ink and can keep the printer in maintenance
  • Do not reseat cartridges every two minutes. Let one init finish
  • Do not start HP Easy Start while the printer is still initializing — discovery will fail. Wait for Ready, then Easy Start or add by IP
