"Cartridge not recognized," "Incompatible ink," or error 0x83c0000e on an HP printer usually means dirty contacts, a mis-seated cartridge, or firmware blocking third-party supplies — not always a bad cartridge.
Inkjet cartridges (DeskJet, OfficeJet, Envy)
- Power off the printer, wait 60 seconds, power on
- Remove the cartridge and check for protective tape on contacts or nozzles
- Clean copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth — no water on nozzles
- Reinsert until it clicks; close the access door fully
- Update firmware only if HP Smart prompts — some updates tighten cartridge checks
LaserJet toner not recognized
- Remove toner, check for packing strip or orange seal left on a new cartridge
- Re-seat toner and drum unit if your model separates them
- Reset supplies: some LaserJet models offer a "Supplies Status" reset in the service menu (model-specific)
Third-party vs HP Original
HP printers may warn on remanufactured cartridges. The printer often still works after you dismiss the warning. If it refuses entirely, try an HP Original cartridge once to confirm the slot works — then decide on compatible brands.
After a refill or remanufactured chip
Chip mismatches are common. A cartridge resetter or HP-branded replacement chip may be needed on some OfficeJet models. For most home users, a genuine or HP-certified cartridge is the fastest fix.
