A carriage stalled message on an HP DeskJet, Envy, or OfficeJet means the printhead carriage could not travel the full width. Forcing it by hand can strip the belt. Power off first and look for a physical block.
Clear the path
- Unplug the printer. Open the cartridge door and look for packing tape, a loose cartridge, or paper under the carriage
- Gently slide the carriage only if it moves freely. If it is locked in the cap station, plug in and let the printer initialize — do not yank it
- Reseat each cartridge until it clicks. A high cartridge holds the carriage up and trips the stall sensor. See cartridge not recognized if one will not seat
- Remove scraps from the paper path, then close the door firmly. A door sensor can stop the carriage: door open error
After it moves again
Plug in, wait through maintenance in progress, and print a nozzle check. Repeating stalls with a clean path usually mean a worn belt, encoder strip, or carriage motor — stop printing until that is checked.
