When an HP Smart Tank runs a job but the page comes out blank, the cause is usually empty or air-locked ink, a clogged printhead, or a driver setting — not a failed printer.
Check ink tanks first
- Open the tank cover and confirm each color is above the minimum line
- Refill if needed using our ink refill guide
- Wait for priming to finish after a refill before sending more jobs
Run nozzle check and clean
- In HP Smart or the printer menu, print a Nozzle Check pattern
- If lines are missing or faded, run Clean Printhead once
- Print the check again; only run a second clean if gaps remain
- Avoid stacking clean cycles — they use ink and can worsen air issues
New printer or after shipping
Confirm all protective tape and seals were removed at setup. First ink charge can take several minutes; interrupting power mid-charge often causes blank or partial pages until you re-run initialization.
Driver and document checks
- Print a test page from Windows or Mac printer properties — not from Word or a PDF
- Turn off draft mode temporarily; try Normal quality
- Try another file; some PDFs send empty layers
