If an HP printer powers on but Windows or Mac never detects it over USB, the cable, port, or driver package is the usual cause. A wireless-only failure is different — start with WiFi not connecting if USB is not in use.
USB checks
- Use a data USB cable, not a charge-only phone cable. Plug into a rear PC port, not an unpowered hub
- Power the printer on first, then connect USB. Wait until the PC makes a device sound
- On Windows, open Device Manager. An unknown device or yellow mark means the driver did not bind. Unplug, remove the unknown device, and reconnect
- Install the full HP package or HP Smart while USB is connected. Windows’ basic driver can miss scan: not scanning
Mac and mixed setups
On Mac, open System Settings → Printers & Scanners and add the USB printer if it appears when the cable is attached. If the printer only shows on WiFi, USB detection is still broken — do not assume the printer is offline. Queue problems after it is detected belong in printer offline or Windows 11 drivers.
