If your HP printer still prints but will not scan, the print path is fine — the scan software, USB/WiFi discovery, or ADF sensor is the problem. Do not reinstall toner or ink first.
Quick scan checks
- Confirm the printer shows Ready and is on the same network as the PC (or use a known-good USB cable for a test)
- Open HP Smart → Scan. If the printer is missing there, also check HP Smart cannot find printer
- On Windows, open Windows Scan or Fax and Scan and select the HP scanner device, not only the print queue
- Lift the scanner lid and try a flatbed scan. If flatbed works but the ADF fails, clean the ADF rollers and check for a stuck sheet
Driver and software fix
Windows 11 often installs a print-only driver. Download the full feature software for your model from HP, or use HP Smart with the complete scan component. After install, reboot once, then remove duplicate HP queues under Printers & scanners.
If the printer is offline for print and scan together, start with printer offline or WiFi not connecting.
