An HP printer “out of paper” or “load tray” message with a full tray means the paper sensor never saw a sheet — or the job is pointed at an empty tray. It is not the same as a mid-path jam.
Check the tray the job is using
- Open the print dialog and set the paper source to the tray you loaded, not Automatic if tray 1 is empty
- Match the paper size on the panel to the stack (Letter vs A4). A size mismatch looks like an empty tray
- Slide the width and length guides snug against the paper. Loose guides leave the sensor in the “empty” position
- Fan the stack, reload below the fill line, and print a panel test page before a Windows job
When the sensor still says empty
Curled, damp, or glossy paper can sit under the sensor flag without lifting it. Try a short stack of plain 20 lb paper. If the printer buzzes and never grabs a sheet, treat it as a pickup failure: pick motor stalled. Visible paper in a door is a jam, not an empty tray.
