Pick motor stalled (sometimes “printer pick motor stalled”) means the motor that turns the pickup roller never grabbed a sheet from the tray. It is not the same as paper stuck halfway through the fuser. Forcing a jam clear in the wrong door will not fix a pick failure.
What the printer is trying to do
On HP LaserJet (and some OfficeJet) trays, a pick roller drops onto the stack and the pick motor turns. If the stack is too high, too low, glossy, or the roller is glazed, the motor stalls or the printer reports a pick error after a few retries.
Fix pick motor stalled
- Pull the tray. Remove the stack, fan it, reload below the fill line. Align the guides to the paper, not loosely
- Try tray 2 vs tray 1 / multipurpose. If only one tray fails, the pickup roller or separation pad in that tray is worn — not the formatter
- Clean the pickup roller with a lint-free cloth slightly damp with water. Let it dry. Alcohol can glaze rubber; skip it unless HP’s model note says otherwise
- Use plain 20–24 lb paper for the test. Cardstock, labels, and damp paper stall the pick motor on many M402 / M404 class LaserJets
- If the roller is smooth and shiny, replace the pickup roller (or roller kit) for that tray. Software resets will not restore grip
Pick error vs paper jam
- Pick stalled: no sheet left the tray, or the sheet never reached the first sensor
- Jam: paper is visible in the door, duplexer, or output. Clear that first, then retry pick
A false jam after a pick stall is common: the sensor saw motion that did not finish. Clear scraps, then run a panel test page — not a 20-page Windows job.
When it is hardware
If both trays stall, you hear a buzz then silence, and rollers are new, the pick motor or drive gear may be failing. Stop printing until it is checked; repeated stalls chew the gears.
