HP LaserJet Pro M402dn — Ethernet Setup and Windows 11

The HP LaserJet Pro M402dn is USB or Ethernet only. There is no wireless radio. If a setup wizard asks for WiFi, you have the wrong package or you are looking at an M15w/M201dw guide.

The M402n is the same engine without duplex. That page now redirects here — skip any duplex steps if you have an M402n.

Get the right driver

On Windows 11, the built-in IPP driver will print and then fail duplex or tray 2. Download the HP Universal Print Driver (PCL 6) or the M402 Full Feature package from support.hp.com for “LaserJet Pro M402dn”. Run it as Administrator. Prefer USB for first install, then move the queue to the printer IP.

USB not detected

  1. Use a data cable on a rear PC port, not a hub
  2. Power the printer on before you plug USB
  3. In Device Manager, a yellow bang under Printers or USB means the cable or port — not a missing download

Ethernet: add by IP, not discovery

  1. Patch cable to a switch. No link light: auto crossover / Ethernet
  2. Print a config page (OK + Cancel, or the information button combo on the 2-line panel) and note the IP
  3. Windows: Add printer → TCP/IP → that IP → HP UPD or M402dn driver
  4. Ping the IP. 169.254.x.x means DHCP failed — set a static IP on the panel or reserve DHCP

HP Smart often will not list this model. That is normal. Do not keep reinstalling Easy Start.

Windows 11 and offline

After a router restart the IP changes and the queue goes offline. Remove the old TCP/IP port and add the new address. Spooler loops: print spooler.

Duplex and paper path

Automatic duplex is built in on the dn, not the n. If two-sided jobs jam, check the rear door, then jam clear or pick motor stalled if the tray never feeds. Toner is HP 85A / 85X.
