A print spooler error on Windows stops every job — including HP LaserJet, OfficeJet, and DeskJet models. The spooler is the service that queues print jobs; when it crashes, nothing prints until you reset it.
Quick fix: restart Print Spooler
- Press Windows + R, type
services.msc, press Enter - Find Print Spooler → right-click → Restart
- Try printing again
Or open Command Prompt as Administrator: net stop spooler then net start spooler
Clear stuck jobs from the spool folder
- Stop Print Spooler (services.msc or
net stop spooler) - Open
C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS - Delete all files in that folder (not the folder itself)
- Start Print Spooler again
If the spooler will not stay running
- Set Print Spooler startup type to Automatic in services.msc
- Remove duplicate HP printers — keep one queue for your model
- Reinstall the HP driver after clearing the queue
- Run Windows Update; spooler fixes often ship in cumulative updates
HP-specific tip
HP Universal Print Driver conflicts sometimes break the spooler. Uninstall the printer, remove old HP software from Apps & Features, then install the driver for your exact model from HP Support.
