HP printer event 74899 almost never appears as a two-line message on the printer LCD. It shows up in Windows Event Viewer, HP Print and Scan Doctor, or HP Support Assistant when HP software cannot finish a device operation — install, firmware check, or status poll.
Treat it as a communication failure between the PC and an HP printer, not as a unique paper-path code like a jam. Related status events such as event 69552 often appear in the same log window.
What 74899 usually points to
- USB dropped during HP Easy Start or a firmware update
- The printer went to sleep or lost WiFi while HP software was querying it
- A leftover HP service (Print Scan Doctor, Support Assistant, old Full Feature install) fighting the current driver
- Windows Print Spooler crashed mid-job so HP’s helper logged 74899
If the printer itself shows a hex code or “offline,” fix that first: offline, spooler, or error codes.
Fix event 74899 step by step
- Power drain: turn the printer off, unplug 60 seconds, plug in, wait until idle
- Same for the PC USB path: unplug USB, wait, use a different port. For WiFi, print a config page and ping the IP
- Clear the queue and restart Print Spooler
- Event Viewer: Windows Logs → Application. Filter on HP / Print. If 74899 repeats every few minutes with the printer off, uninstall leftover HP background apps
- Firmware: from HP Support for your exact model, preferably over USB so the update cannot drop WiFi mid-flash
- Clean install: remove the printer in Windows, uninstall HP software you do not need, reboot, add the printer again (Easy Start or IP — see Easy Start cannot find printer)
When 74899 is not a Windows glitch
If a configuration page will not print from the panel, or the printer reboots in a loop, the formatter or main logic board is failing. Logging 74899 on the PC is a symptom. Stop reinstalling drivers and have the hardware checked.
