An HP DesignJet is a plotter, not a desk printer. HP Smart and a USB Easy Start package often will not see it. Use DesignJet Utility, HP Click, or the printer's embedded web server, then fix roll, network, and printhead issues on their own terms.
Which software actually talks to a DesignJet
- HP DesignJet Utility / HP Click — job submit, roll status, and HP-GL/2 or PDF to the plotter
- Embedded web server (EWS) — type the plotter IP in a browser for firmware, network, and usage
- HP PrintOS / HP Support Assistant — fleet and firmware on newer T-series and Z-series
If you installed only HP Smart, uninstall that queue and add the plotter by IP with the DesignJet driver from HP Support for your exact model (T650, T730, T1600, Z6, Z9, and similar).
Plotter not found on the network
- Print a configuration page from the DesignJet front panel and note the IP, subnet, and gateway
- Ping that IP from the workstation. No reply means a switch, VLAN, or cable problem — not a driver problem
- DesignJets are almost always Ethernet. Confirm the link light on the plotter NIC; a bad patch cable or a port stuck at 10 Mbps is a common miss on older units. No light: auto crossover / Ethernet link
- Add the printer in Windows with Add a printer using a TCP/IP address and the HP DesignJet driver, not a generic PCL queue
- Disable APIPA: the plotter should not sit on 169.254.x.x if the office uses DHCP
If the plotter was moved to a new switch, the old IP is stale. Re-add the queue after the config page shows a live address. Same idea as a stuck offline printer, but you recover from the panel IP, not HP Smart discovery.
HP DesignJet Utility will not open or will not list the device
- Run the Utility as Administrator on Windows
- Allow it through the firewall for private networks (it uses SNMP and mDNS on the LAN)
- If two versions are installed (legacy Utility plus HP Click), keep the one HP lists for your series and remove the other
- On a print server, install the Utility on the server that holds the shared queue, not only on the CAD workstation
Line quality, banding, and missing color
- Run printhead alignment and a diagnostic plot from the front panel — not a Windows test page
- Check ink / printhead status in EWS. A DesignJet can report Ready while one color is out
- Load the roll with the printable side as the panel diagram shows. A reversed roll looks like a driver color bug
- For CAD line work, send HP-GL/2 or a vector PDF from HP Click. Printing a raster screenshot from a browser will look soft
If banding remains after alignment and a new roll, the printhead or service station needs a hardware check — that is not a Windows driver reinstall.
Paper not loading (roll vs sheet)
- Confirm the panel is set to the actual source: roll 1, roll 2, or sheet
- Trim a clean square leading edge; a torn roll edge will loop and jam the pinch rollers
- Match paper type in the driver to the loaded media. Wrong type shifts margins and can abort the job
When this is not a DesignJet problem
OfficeJet, Envy, and LaserJet issues belong on the HP help hub (offline, Easy Start, event codes). Plotter support is the Utility, the IP, and the roll path.
